Super exciting news, wait for it.....lol

I have just released my 2nd official music video for my new Holiday single "Sunny Day in January!!!!" This song is all about getting outside, having fun and enjoying a Sunny day in January!!! The video was filmed locally in Nelson and surrounding area and features my friends, family and band members. We had a great time making it, and I sure hope you enjoy watching it.

Some fun tidbits about the video shoot:

Hardest shot to get: the car scene in the beginning actually took the longest to shoot and involved me driving past the Hume Hotel super slowly and then pulling a U turn to drive around again, probably a good 30 times! With streamers on the car, a saxophone on the roof and traffic around us.

My favourite part of the shoot: seeing all my friends and family dancing during the NYE celebration scenes at the end. We had a bunch on family and young kids at the shoot and had to do multiple takes of the dancing bits. All us parents knew there was only a certain amount of time before the kiddos turned on us and mayhem would begin....but they made it through and we celebrated after with a pizza party.

Funniest part: probably watching the guys load gear down the stairs again and again, and I couldn't even help because I was portraying the DIVA who just walks off the elevator like "What are you guys looking so worked up for?" Steves face (my drummer) in the elevator shot when I walk out gets me every time, and the double shot of Dad (Jon Burden - guitar) grimacing as he loads my heavy amp down the stairs, priceless!

A big Thank you goes out to Clinton Swanson for co-writing and producing the song, helping to organize and direct the video shoot and being all around awesome!!! I would also like to thank; Nancy Rosemblum (Director/Video Editor), FMRL Productions (Director/Videographer), all our video shoot volunteers, Aszjeca Burden (Makeup), Leona Lebel (Hair), my band members, family (Saul, Siarrah, Jossif, my Dad Jon Burden, my Mom Jane (for the behind the scenes photos), my Sister Aszjeca and my Brother in Law Mike and baby Reverie!), Clintons family, all our friends (Callie and Blaine your dancing was fabulous) and the Nelson Dance group was so much fun. Such an amazing experience and the most special part was getting to share it with everyone!

It has been a busy spring season in the beautiful Slocan Valley!

The big news is my Wild Heart album will be released on April 26th! Wow this album has been three years in the making and is a labour of love, for the music and songs. I am so excited to finally share them all with you! I will have pre sales of the album available on April 1st and will also be selling albums at all my release shows in April.

My spring album release shows are:

I am performing all these shows with my amazing five piece soul blues band consisting of:

Holly Hyatt: Vocals and Bass

Clinton Swanson: Saxophones, Flute, Background Vocals and Percussion.

Jack Taforo: Keyboards

Jon Burden: Acoustic/Electric Guitar and Background vocals.

Steve Wilson: Drums

I feel so blessed to have these fellows in my life. They are extremely talented, kind and hard working!

Another big news item is my song "River Flows" recently won a Kootenay Music Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Song. I was in the category with three other wonderful female artists and feel so honoured to have received the award. Right before my "Wild Heart" album release, such amazing timing!!

On a personal note I have been loving all the sunshine we have been receiving in the Kootenay's and can't wait to get my garden growing! I live on a 1 3/4 acre piece of property with multiple gardens and berry patches. Getting my hands in the dirt and watching all the yummy veggies grow, is one of my favourite parts of the Spring.

So to sum it up I am feeling very thankful and blessed this spring:)

I hope to see you at one of my Album Release Shows!

Blessings Friends:)

Wow 2018, for me it has been a year of new experiences, change, learning and growth.

Some of my highlights are:

Our two week family camping trip at Rathtrevor Provincial Park on Vancouver island. So nice to getaway with the fam and enjoy walking along the beach, exploring tidal pools and driftwood playhouses. Biking through the coastal rainforest, canoeing and exploring the local caves. We also did a day trip to Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park and hiked along the boardwalk to the 1000 year old Heaven tree.

Taking the leap and leaving my day job to pursue music full time. A big decision I did not take lightly, but at this point in my life I want to focus all of my energy on my music career and family. It feels so good to be following my dreams and creating the life I want. Along with this has come a lot of learning, many new skills have been discovered (website design, grant writing, social media marketing etc) As always I throughly enjoyed all the live music shows I performed. Thank you to everyone that came out, purchased CD's and danced the night away! Another huge thank you goes out to CKCA, your funding for my album was the extra nudge I needed to take the leap!

Climbing Mt. Gimli. This is a bucket list item for me, something that has excited and terrified me for years. Ever since I started sport climbing at age 18 I have looked up at Gimli Peak and dreamed of climbing it.
Releasing my first solo single and music video for River Flows. This is a big one and I am so happy with the way it all turned out. I love to write songs that mix old and new, different genres and that have a wide variety of lyrical content. I also love to write songs from an intuitive place that have a lot of personal meaning. I call them my heart songs and when I perform them it just feels so right. River Flows is definitely one of those songs and I am so grateful for the positive response the song and video have received. Thank you Thank you Thank you!

Backpacking through Thailand with our two kids. My Husband and I backpacked in Thailand 10 years ago for our honeymoon and we have always wanted to go back once we had a family. So this fall we decided to just book the tickets and make it happen. We are one month into our two month trip and so far it has been a lot of fun, mixed with a lot of parental patience! We have traveled to the South Eastern island of Koh Chang, Bangkok and then up to Northern Thailand (Chang Mai and Chiang Dao). We have spent a very quite version of the Christmas holidays in Chiang Dao, eating lots of amazing food, going to cave temples and hot springs. Next week we head down to Southern Thailand for rock climbing and beach life.

Well it has been a busy fall for me in my little corner of paradise, here in the Slocan Valley.

In September I released my debut solo single River Flows. After working on the song and video for so long, it was nerve racking and exciting to share it with the world and let it fly. All the positive response I have received from fans, friends and the music community has eased my nerves though and continues to make me smile on a daily basis. Thank you! My favourite thing about music is how it connects us and lets me express myself to you in a real way.

In October I had the pleasure of opening up for the very talented JW-Jones. So fun to sing and play my bass, with my band of very talented fellas:) JW Jones had a very high energy show, with a diverse range of blues and blues rock tunes. I chatted with him and Laura Greenberg during the soundcheck and they are both such nice, down to earth people. JW is a great business man and was full of tips for me.

Here is a little video snippet of our show. We are performing one of my favourite blues standards Voodoo Woman Holly Hyatt Band: Voodoo Woman

And now it is November, already wow that happened fast! My family and I are sneaking away on a vacation to Thailand in December and January, so November has been all about wrapping up my projects and getting ready to vacay! My producer Clinton Swanson has been hard at work doing all the mixes for my Wild Heart Album. They are sounding great. I am so happy with the vibe, songs and performances, by all the artists on this album. It has been a long haul and a true labour of love but it is almost there. My release date is April 2019. Now that is exciting!!!

Here is a little complication video of some of my demo tracks Blues Compilation - New Songs!

Well now I need to go practice before I have to pick up my kiddos.

Blessings friends:)

Holly.
Holly Hyatttag:hollyhyatt.com,2005:Post/54304442018-09-17T22:04:07-07:002023-10-16T07:52:59-07:00Intuitive Songwriting
Intuitive songwriting is when you are in the zone. The song just seems to come to you, and then flow out of you, onto your piece of paper, and through your instrument/voice. Songs written intuitively are the easy ones to write, because you are so in the moment. They are the songs that songwriters say "just came to them", and they are often very powerful, because they are coming from an innate part of that persons being.

Intuitive songwriting is definitely my favourite form of writing and when I can get into that zone, I am a very happy songwriter.

Over the years I have developed some tools that help me get into the happy, zen zone of intuitive songwriting. So here they are, happy songwriting friends:)

Set up your space: when I am in a clean space, surrounded by my bass, piano, guitar and journal. I really feel focused and in the zone. Whether you have a corner of your bedroom, a full studio, or are sitting outside on the grass. Make sure you are comfortable and in a space that allows you to relax, tune in and open up.

Get grounded and in your zone: Before you sit down to write, do some stretches, go for a walk, meditate, sit outside, whatever it takes to get you into a quiet space, where you can really connect with how you are feeling and what you want to say in your song.

Journal: Having a daily journal practice helps keep you in the writing flow, so when you sit down to write a song it feels natural. It also allows for free form writing, so you can express the words that may not fit into song format. When I write free form poetry in my journal and complete my daily gratitude practice, I find it so much easier to write songs. These daily practices keep me connected to my creative side, so I can get out of my head and into the intuitive songwriting zone that much faster.

Record your song when it comes to you: If you feel like a creative spark is taking, you have an idea for a lyric or you start humming a little bit of melody. Maybe you pick out a cool chord progression on your guitar or a new bass groove. Record it immediately! Stop whatever you are doing and just get that little snippet of inspiration recorded. If you have the time and space, work on your song. If you don't, you can always come back to it later. Those moments are your intuition nudging you to express something, to create something. Follow it! I just use the voice memo app on my phone to record my idea and then work on it when I have time. There have been some song ideas I have not recorded in the moment, thinking they would come back to me later and they didn't. They were lost, so sad. Don't let that happen to you!

Listen to music that inspires you: Put on one of your favourite songwriters music and just listen. Feel the mood of the song, listen to the build in the arrangement, listen to the story in the lyrics. What do you like about it? Experiment with similar ideas or vibes and then make them your own. Even if you don't get a song out of this exercise, it expands your creativity and puts you in the intuitive songwriting flow.

Just write it down as it comes: If you are working on lyrics, just write them down as they come to you. Don't judge or edit at this point, just get it down. You can go back later and re format or write an alternate lyric if you want to. I find it's really interesting to just write it down and then leave it. Often I am surprised at what came out of me, what I was feeling that I didn't even realize. Sometimes it's brilliant and sometimes it's not ,but it's important to express it and get it out.

I am always looking to learn and grow as a songwriter. What are some of the tools you use to get into the intuitive songwriting zone?

Blessings Friends.
